MIHO MUSEUM
Today we’re going to introduce MIHO MUSEUM>>, a museum that is closed for one-third of the time in a year.
As a private art gallery located amid the abundant natural beauty of the mountains of Shigaraki , Miho Museum is probably best known of its design.
Miho Museum was designed by Chinese-American architect I.M. Pei, best known for designing the glass pyramid at the Louvre Museum in Paris.
The design is inspired by the ethereal utopia described in the Taohua Yuan Ji (The Peach Blossom Spring), an ancient work written by Chinese poet Tao Yuanming.
Walking from the reception building , you will first led down to a walkway enveloped by weeping cherry tress, then you will pass through a tunnel and a suspension bridge.
Ta-Da! Visitors can get their first view of the museum standing in the beautiful scenery. Just like the scene describe in the ancient work Taohua Yuan Ji.
April – the cherry blossom season – is the most popular time (also the best time?!) for visiting Miho Museum. The visitors can feel like they are in a fairy tale or utopia. The Miho Museum even has an annual cherry blossom flowering report on its website>>.
The museum’s theme is the integration of “nature, architecture and fine art”, “tradition and modernity” and “eastern and western”. More than 80 per cent of the floor area is underground, while the exterior of the building is restored naturally. “Light is the key,” said Pei. When visitors enter the Miho Museum, they are surrounded by the soft sunshine through the geometric pattern glass roof.
The museum is divided into the south building and the north building. In addition to permanent exhibitions, there are seasonal special exhibitions.
After visiting the museum, visitors can enjoy a short footage of the museum history. Through the video, you can find out how the Pei and the Owner Koyama Miho take all kind of details into consideration.
*If you stand on the centre of the circle (the little white spot on the lower left corner), you can hear your echo when you talk.
The gate of the museum. The round glass allows visitors to see a ‘painting’ through.
